Nomad Chooks - A brief introduction

Nomad Pasture Raised Chooks

Our award winning Nomad Chooks are lean, tender, healthy and tasty. They are raised in a brooder in their first few weeks of life, to protect them from weather and predators. Their Nomad Brooder opens daily to allow sunlight, fresh air and insects in and to encourage natural scratching and sun bathing behaviours. It also allows the chicks to become slowly accustomed to natural weather conditions so they are ready to be moved to pasture between 2 - 3 weeks of age.

On pasture, Nomad Chooks are housed in open pens which provide protection from predators, shelter from rain, wind and sun along with access to natural foraging, fresh air and sunlight etc. Half of the roof is covered to allow the chooks to choose to seek shelter and the pens are opened each day so they can chose to go even further afield. Our chooks are further protected by our guardian Maremma Banjo.

Nomad Chooks are moved onto fresh pasture every day which they find delicious along with the bugs they find and the grain, natural minerals and fresh water we provide. They are happy, healthy chooks and the production system is good for them, good for the land, and good for you.

Every one of them is able to scratch and forage, eat fresh grass, dust bathe, and enjoy the sunshine, every day. They consume NO antibiotics, NO hormones, NO chlorine, and NO coccidiostats. They are raised with immune systems not chemicals!

There is no waste produced, only lovely organic fertiliser left behind for the pasture to thrive on. And because the chooks don’t stay in one place for more than a day, and don’t return for 6-12 months, these chooks regenerate rather than pollute the pasture and the landscape.

All this adds up to a delicious, nutritionally dense, chemical free product which you can trust has lived well and regenerated land.

We also produce a range of delicious treats made with Nomad Chooks, which are lovingly crafted at the Olfactory Inn in Strathalbyn. The chef Simon Burr uses all local produce to make Chicken Liver Pate, Chicken Broth, Chicken Stock and Rendered Chicken Fat. These treats are of exceptional quality and flavour.

Some of what our customers have to say about Nomad Chooks:

"As a strong supporter of ethically raised animals and conscious food consumption, I have been a discerning meat buyer for years. Nomad chickens have filled a gap in the market where false claims and stretched truths have allowed the term “free range” to cover all manner of undesirable conditions for raising poultry. The chickens are lovingly treated, allowed to scratch and peck on acres of beautiful farm land and this quality of life is evident in the quality of their meat, which I find to be perfect in terms of leanness and texture. Nomad chickens are so substantial for their size – so much meat comes off them and the bones make an incredible stock, they are a truly quality product and different to any chickens that I have sourced before."

Anna Reeves - McLaren Vale

"I recently bought some chicken from Nomad Farm (9 to be exact). This was my first purchase and I dove into it with fingers crossed and delivered them all over town to different members of my family. This morning I got feedback from all the deliveries and everyone was truly delighted. The difference in quality (taste, texture and even plumpness) is so dramatic that my grandmother had forgotten how superb quality chicken can be (she's in her nineties and still a complete food aficionado).
As for me, a single gal, my Sunday roast (one chook) has thus far lasted 5 meals and is still going. YUM.
I'll be buying again, thanks Nomad."

Megan - Parkside

"I like to know the provenance and ethics behind the produce I eat. I hadn't eaten chicken in over 3 years but was blown away by the taste, size and density of the Nomad birds. Truly free-range farming"
